Hospital to get facelift and energy makeover with giant facade elements

Measuring approx. 3 x 4 m, the new facade elements consist of a frame made of Fiberline's GRP profiles glued onto a glazing pane. When the installation is complete later this year, the hospital's most eyecatching building will have been transformed both architecturally and in terms of energy performance.

As part of a major long-term plan for Vendsyssel Hospital in Hjørring, Denmark, the highest building in the hospital complex is currently undergoing an energy renovation in which a complete new curtain walling will be mounted on the outside of the existing facade.

Dominating the skyline at Vendsyssel Hospital, "Building 40" was opened in 1989 and is one of the hospital's more recent buildings. With its new skin consisting of large, self-supporting glazed elements from Glas Trösch of Switzerland, assembled using Fiberline GRP profiles at Fjelsø Entreprise A/S in Denmark, "Building 40" will be energyoptimised in accordance with Danish Building Regulations 2020.

Structural glazing for a slim and modern look
The GRP frames are glued directly onto the glass using the "structural glazing technique", which has previously been employed in a number of other buildings, including Fiberline's own highly distinctive factory in Middelfart, Denmark.

The technique offers a number of advantages:

  • Flexibility of design, enabling the architect to create a super-slim, uncluttered look
  • Good static properties, permitting a self-supporting construction
  • Good thermal characteristics due to the excellent insulation of the GRP composite
  • A construction which requires no maintenance
  • Speedy installation

As a part of the energy renovation project the existing rendered balconies and external sun protection will be removed. In addition, the existing thermal windows will be replaced by new glazing equipped with integral blinds offering easy sunlight and glare control. The internal facades will therefore have a very low maintenance requirement and together with the future building envelope will create a clean and light architectural look.
