Ferry passengers arriving at the Rødby border crossing are welcomed by a new building with translucent Lay Light panels. Our customer, the Danish Police, wanted something that was both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Resistant to stressing caused by the Baltic Sea

The white tarpaulins and tents that are usually used at border crossings were not enough for this location, being right by the Baltic Sea. A permanent, strong structure was needed that would be resistant to the wind blowing off the Baltic. The solution was a steel structure clad in glass fibre panels, which are corrosion free and are therefore highly durable, even when placed in close proximity to salt water.

Specially designed for the purpose

The building was specially designed with a slope on one side so that both cars and lorries could drive in under the canopy. At the same time, one of the other requirements was for the building to offer protection from the sun without blocking out all light. Glass was therefore not an option. Accordingly, the Danish Police chose Lay Light glass fibre panels as the cladding for the canopy; with their translucent properties, these panels let light in for the benefit of both staff and passengers in the inspection area.

Also important in architectural terms

The building was designed by the Danish Police’s own architect in order to meet the Police’s practical needs whilst also giving the building appealing architectural features. The canopy and sides were clad in our 16-metre MD planks, which form a calm, harmonious surface.
