The big day finally arrived for the inauguration of the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge south of Herning Station.
With a length of 30 meters and a width of three meters, the bridge creates an essential connection between Tangsøparken and the new residential areas near TvÌrgade. The bridge makes it easier for residents to cross the railway tracks and provides quick access to Hammerum.
The choice of materials for the bridge was carefully planned. Daniel Stidsen, road engineer at Herning Municipality, explains:
"We have good experience with fiberglass from previous projects, especially on smaller bridges. Fiberglass provides a sleek and lightweight structure, which is a significant advantage. Additionally, rising steel prices were also an important factor in our decision."
The deck and railings of the bridge are made of fiberglass, which, in addition to being lightweight, is also durable and slip-resistant. The supporting structure is made of steel.
Watch the video below to see both the construction of the bridge and the bridge on its opening day for the citizens.
The installation of the bridge was carried out with military precision. The main contractor, Kaj Bech A/S, began the work in June with the construction of foundations, concrete pillars, and braces. The bridge itself was manufactured by JTN Steel in Esbjerg and delivered as a special transport to Herning, where it awaited placement in HI-Park before being lifted into place by a massive mobile crane.
This project is not only a practical solution for the local community but also an example of modern and sustainable construction methods in infrastructure. The bridge demonstrates how innovative materials and precise project management can create lasting solutions that strengthen the community and improve connections in the local area.
